Booking hotels can be a mysterious process for some. There are so many ways to go about it that it can be hard to decide which is best. Some will call the hotel and book over the phone. Some will go to the hotels website and do it from there, but many will now use third party sites and book their hotels through there. These sites will provide a large number of options in one place and will sometimes also have deals on the rooms which makes it seem like a no brainer to people. It is undeniable that they are convenient and can be the correct choice in many situations but there is a hidden cost many don’t realize. The hotel owner gets the worst end of the deal and is less likely to care about your experience!

The way these sites make the customers experience better is by making the life of the hotel owner worse. While larger hotels can absorb this as the cost of doing business, smaller hotels like the ones you will often find in Europe will be hurt by this far more. This means the service you will receive is often worse than if you bought directly from the hotel. For instance, rather than getting a nice room on a higher floor with lots of natural light they might give the people who booked through these third parties the rooms on the first floor where it is dark like a dungeon. They simply won’t care as much to give you a good experience as they made much less money than normal and had a worse experience then they would have if you bought straight from them. While there are instances where this isn’t an issue it should at least be kept in mind when booking a hotel.
