The Taxi Scam

I recently went to Las Vegas and took a taxi to get around quite frequently. When traveling places can sometimes be quite large and if there isn’t strong public transit you will be left with no choice but to take a taxi. What happened though shocked me. The taxi driver intentionally went the wrong way under the excuse of going to the highway. The thing was the highway was under construction, so we had to turn around and go back the other way. This doubled the length of our trip and doubled the cost. Seems innocent enough, but that highway had been closed for close to a year. The taxi driver intentionally took a bad route to get more money out of us. This is what I am calling the taxi scam. When drivers take intentionally bad routes to get a larger fare from customers. There isn’t a lot you can do but one trick to combat this is to have a map open with the route. If the taxi driver is straying far off of the GPS route you can call them on it and ask them to take you the way you have pulled up. This will help give you a predictable fare and can prevent you from paying a ridiculous sum like we did. If you don’t have internet for pulling up something like google maps you can download apps like MAPS.ME which offer downloadable road maps. That way you can use a GPS even without internet.

About Jim Casington

Hi. I'm Jim. I have been traveling the world in a van for some years now. I have been all over and seen so many things. My only hope is to share some of the experience I have gathered in my wild journey through life with you all. Some wonder how I travel the world in a van. I mean, how would I get across the ocean. Well this isn't for everyone I sell the van and get a new one when I switched to traveling Europe. It takes a certain person to do but I am that person so I love it!
